The misty morning we sat with the Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda was one of the most memorable travel experiences we have ever had. We arrived at the Mgahinga national park headquarters and were briefed on appropriate behaviours and sounds to make during our visit to these gentle giants. Accompanied by trackers who macheted through the foliage and armed guides for our protection, we made our way to a family group who had been located about an hours walk into the jungle. We approached their space tentatively but were reassured when we observed how gentle they were with each other. We watched a mother feed her baby and little ones tumbling and playing. A gentle rain fell and they sheltered under the giant palm leaves. The silverback walked behind us but we lowered our eyes and growled passively in the appropriate manner and he calmly made his way to a different part of the forest. We sat in a half circle mesmerised for twenty minutes, but it felt like three, when we were called to leave we all felt sad but privileged to have witnessed these amazing creatures in the wild.
The trip was so so wonderful mainly in the Impenetrable forest were we happened to meet our hairy cousins. I promise to come back soon. Thank you so much to our guide Bernard
